A group of Spanish tourists board a bus bound for Lisbon. When they arrived, they were in for a rude awakening. Instead of the 4-star hotel the agency had booked, they found themselves in an old, dark, and run-down hotel. Exhausted, they reluctantly agree to spend the night there. But the next morning, to everyone’s astonishment, one of them is found dead.
While most of the group accepts the police’s quick conclusion (suicide), four curious individuals will try to dig deeper into the case: Daniel, a young man with autism who is a fan of Sherlock; Alicia, a young woman who doesn’t let anyone push her around; Fabio, a handsome but unreliable guy; and Pura, a retiree searching for meaning in her life.
Together, these budding detectives will throw a supposedly perfect murder case into disarray and reignite a treasure hunt through the streets of Lisbon.
An unlikely yet endearing quartet of amateur detectives
Clearly, Hulu wanted to produce a Spanish version of its hit series (and one of my all-time favorites): Only Murders in the Building. Here, too, characters meet, and a friendship blossoms, centered around their shared fascination with crime. Here we have a genuine mystery story told at a brisk pace with a comedic twist.
However, this series maintains it’s true originality. For one thing, the choice of a quartet of characters is worth noting! Trios (like in OMitB) are already rare. A storyline centered on a quartet is quite unique. Furthermore, Spanish culture is different from that of New Yorkers, and our protagonists have their own unique way of conducting the investigation.
Just like its predecessor, the series is well worth watching for its bold artistic choices and its cast of endearing characters who defy convention. But also for the stunning views of Lisbon. The city practically becomes a character in its own right in the investigation. I can’t wait for season 2!
