Cloud Nine, a chain store in St Louis, Missouri. Glenn Sturgis is the proud and overly nice manager of a team of a few dozen employees who handle the registers, the aisles, and the warehouse. Dina, his assistant, is his polar opposite when it comes to relationships: more attached to birds than to people, she terrifies everyone. Amy, Cheyenne, Garrett, Mateo, Sandra and many others try to balance an unfulfilling job with a private life that is often complicated.
Jonah, the newest hire, is a pretentious intellectual who makes no secret of his disdain for his new job. Dedicated to serving even the most indifferent customers, Cloud Nine’s employees take pride in their work. At first annoyed, his colleagues will welcome him into the group and show him that, despite all their bickering, they’re a real family.

It’s not the plot of the series that makes it excellent, but the writing! The characters are all incredibly endearing, the dialogue is sharp, and everyone will easily relate to the ups and downs of everyday life. It’s funny, moving, and also an accurate portrayal of the changes taking place in our society.
First aired in 2015 and concluding after the pandemic, the series chronicles, over the course of its seasons, the decline of brick-and-mortar stores in the face of online retail platforms. We are witnessing merger and acquisition attempts by major retail chains, and their harsh impact on employees who are dedicated to their work. It’s sad, but it’s certainly one of the inevitable steps in the transition to a digital life where we live apart from one another.
The quirky camaraderie of this great team and their solidarity in times of crisis only make the series all the more endearing.
