Ruth struggles to make ends meet: her maple syrup farm is barely profitable, thanks to the shenanigans of her neighbor, president of the producers’ association. In addition, she must be caring for her husband in a coma. His friend Mike would like to help, but he’s always getting into scrapes that don’t earn him anything, since all the money is owed to his mafia boss. A few maple trees away, Remy, a gentle loser, dreams of proving to everyone what he can do. United by their woes, the improvised trio decide to pull off a heist so improbable that no one will see it coming: they’re going to steal a stockpile of several thousand liters of maple syrup!

Dark humor and snowy woods

At last, an original story, not a spin-off reboot of a film adaptation! And what’s more, this crazy story is based on a very real event. Just goes to show that reality sometimes surpasses fiction… Between 2011 and 2012, staff of the maple syrup cooperative emptied barrels, replacing the syrup with water. But they eventually left them empty, and a weight check revealed the deception. The real protagonists were caught. This mind-boggling heist is the setting for a mini-series full of offbeat humor. Three losers, but each with useful skills when it comes to scheming. It’s impossible not to become attached to this trio of improvised thieves. The three actors are excellent, surrounded by a fine cast of secondary characters: family, cops, and Jamie Lee Curtis as a hitman.

For a taste of Quebec’s culture, this refreshing series is to be savoured with relish.
