The Night Agent

The night agent Peter and Rose

Peter Sutherland is an FBI agent, as his father was. His father died many years ago, being accused of treason, before he could go to trial. Peter had to grow up with the weight of doubt, and then face the permanent mistrust of his hierarchy for his father’s supposed fault. Yet Peter has proved his worth. He heroically stopped a metro bombing. All it got him was a boring job in the basement of the White House. He has to stand by a telephone every night, in case a secret agent from the Night Action program calls for help.

But then, after a year, the phone rang. On the other end, not an agent, but Rose Larkin, a panicked young woman who has just seen her aunt and uncle attacked by killers. Peter uses all his training to help Rose evade the killers until help arrives. He is ordered to join her and take her to safety. Pursued, they must flee before tracking down the killers in their turn. A computer genius with a strong character, Rose will prove resourceful.

Little by little, the threat of a vast attack is revealed, and a conspiracy that goes right up to the highest levels of government. Peter and Rose’s courage may not be enough against such a powerful enemy.

Like the mission, action comes first!

The script and dialogues are sorely lacking in subtlety (though improved a little in season 2). But the whole series relies on the frantic pace of the action, and it works! Not an episode without a chase and a fight, and above all without a narrative twist. We follow the misadventures of our intrepid heroes, as they uncover a vast conspiracy step by step. The characters are fairly well written, even if the series doesn’t escape Manichaeism. Peter and Rose are cute and full of energy. Of course, as they share their fight, a romance develops between them, but they never have the time to let it blossom.

Season 1 focuses on the inner workings of the White House, while Season 2 takes on Iranian diplomats. I’m not a fan of the action genre, but it’s very effective here. I enjoyed devouring this series.
