El refugio atomico / Billionaire’s bunker

El refugio atomico Asia and Max
El refugio atomico Minerva's team
Netflix

The wealthiest individuals in Spain and Europe are being approached by an agency offering them the opportunity to invest in a bunker equipped to withstand 10 years in the event of a cataclysmic disaster. Faced with an imminent nuclear conflict, the agency calls its clients and takes them to safety in the bunker. For their own safety, they do not know where they are and are cut off from all communication with the outside world.

Accustomed to being obeyed and living in luxury, the wealthy clients will have to follow fairly strict rules of conduct, and above all, tolerate each other. When Max Varela, responsible for a car accident that claimed the life of his girlfriend, Ana Falcon, finds himself face to face with Ana’s family, the atmosphere becomes tense. Guillermo Falcon and his daughter Asia are not ready to forgive.

Pride, prejudice and scam…

So many egos locked up together with no hope of escape in the nuclear holocaust—it’s a powder keg. Worse still, cut off from everything, millionaires will have to face a person they usually take care to avoid: themselves. In this group of selfish people, two young people, Max and Asia, are experiencing a story full of conflicting emotions. Max, who has become hardened in prison, quickly suspects that something is wrong. However, he is far from imagining the scam that is at work.

The creator of La Casa de Papel / Money Heist returns to his favorite theme. In the face of the glaring injustices of capitalism, a scam/heist is the rightful move. But this time, instead of robbing a national institution, the billionaire are directly targeted. Here, Minerva becomes the mastermind behind the scam, aided by her brother and a team of specialists, but also by a highly advanced AI. The plot is thrilling, although I found the romantic storylines to be lacking in subtlety. However, it must be acknowledged that Spanish people have a lack of taboos (particularly regarding age) that is uncommon, even in Europe. The ubiquitous orange and blue colors also got a little tiresome for me. But the story is well-constructed and engaging enough that I’m eagerly awaiting season 2.
