Shah Latif is an actor who is starting to make a name for himself. He gets the chance to audition for the role of a lifetime—James Bond—but he panics and messes it up. Disappointed, the young man comes up with a scheme to stay in the public eye as a potential first brown James Bond. But the frenzy on social media can quickly turn against those who start it! Especially when you have a crazy family, a relationship with your ex that’s not quite over yet, and your confidant is a frozen pig’s head.

To be or not to be… Between our roots and our ambition, who are we really?

The family (always dysfunctional) is a never-ending source of inspiration for screenwriters. This one is no exception. The Latifs, who are Pakistani Muslims, live within their community amid rivalry (“My son has done better than yours!”), faith of varying degrees of sincerity, and sacred family ties. The cousins—Zulfi, a self-employed entrepreneur looking for investors, and Q, who’s a bit lost in life—provide a counterpoint to Shah, who’s a bit too serious.

Shah is desperate to find his place, to be accepted by those who mistreated the little Pakistani immigrant, and to prove that he is just as English as everyone else. Through this character, the series raises universal questions: caught between the desire to please and moral and social obligations, we have to make choices. Faced with the pressure to achieve a kind of social “Holy Grail” of success, what are we willing to sacrifice, and how far are we willing to go?

I’m not a fan of dark humor or absurd situations, but this series hooked me with its subtle depth, well hidden beneath a veneer of lighthearted madness.
