For 20 years, Lucky Luke has been a lonesome cowboy. The man who shoots faster than his shadow, the incorruptible lawman who brings every desperado to justice, has become a legend of the Wild West. But then a fearless young woman with a strong personality comes along. Not content with simply doing as she pleases, she saves his life just when, for once, he finds himself in a tight spot.
As a thank-you, Louise asks him to help her find her mother, who has been kidnapped. Although he’s not exactly thrilled about it, Luke can’t refuse—especially when he realizes that the mother in question, Charlie, was his one true love. Unsettled by this untamable teenager who could be his daughter, Luke embarks on a journey across the wild west —and within himself— during which allies and enemies will never be who you might expect.
A fresh look at the big-hearted cowboy
Lucky Luke was originally a Franco-Belgian comic strip created in 1946 by Morris, who was soon joined by the brilliant writer Goscinny (who, along with his friend Uderzo, also created Asterix and Obelix). It has been adapted into numerous animated series and films. So one might wonder what this umpteenth adaptation would bring to the table?
Surprisingly, quite a lot! First of all, while the tone remains comedic, there’s always an emotional undercurrent. Second, the series fills a major gap in Lucky Luke’s story: his past. Why is he so solitary? What shaped him into the exceptional man he has become? Finally, every character—not just the hero—is portrayed here in a completely new light. Billy the Kid struggles to come of age, Calamity Jane is a liar, and Joe manages to become touching (a real feat).
As a fan of Lucky Luke, I started this series with some reservations, but they were quickly put to rest, and I was blown away. Well done!
