Georgia, 31, single mother of two, has always had to fight to survive. Her childhood was dark and devoid of love. She ran away at 15, joined a biker gang, fell for a young photographer and found herself pregnant. That’s how Ginny, his mixed-race daughter, was born, as beautiful as her mother. From one galley to the next, Georgia met several men, and had a son, Austin. But things always went wrong in the end, and Georgia kept running away with her children.
But this time, after the death of her husband and the inheritance of a comfortable sum of money, it’s all over! The little family moved into a lovely house in Wellsbury, Massachusetts, a small, bourgeois, uneventful town. For the first time, Ginny begins to make friends and dream of a little stability. But that’s without Georgia’s propensity for attracting not only men, but also trouble…
Teen traumas
Aimed at a young audience, the series deals with a number of themes linked to adolescence: self-mutilation, depression, bulimia, the quest for popularity, sexual identity… From there, she explores a universal theme: who are we really? To what extent does the past determine the future? To what extent are we influenced by our family and friends? Are our choices really our own? Through trials and traumas, can we really change?
The dialogue is good, along with a beautiful playlist, and the characters all complex and interesting. Each one of them experiences his or her own drama and will have his or her own trajectory over the seasons. The series doesn’t avoid certain clichés. Austin still being in primary school in season 3 (despite being over 10) is beyond ridiculous. And Georgia’s forced southern accent is really annoying. But what it loses in subtlety, it makes up for in dramatic intensity. Georgia manages to thwart some of the threats, but gradually the noose tightens, and when all hell breaks loose, even her strength as a courageous mother won’t be enough. A compelling story.
