Drew and his brother are the sons of sheperds, on the cold coast of the kingdom of Lyssia. On a moonlit night, Drew’s mother is attacked by a terrifying creature. Mad with fear and anger, Drew transforms into a werewolf and scares off the monster, but can’t save her. Dying, his mother reveals to him that he is the last in the line of wolf-lords, rulers of Lyssia until the tyrannical lion-lord exterminated them. When his father and brother arrive and see him alone beside the body, they call for a werewolf hunt. Drew must flee.
His mother has asked him to find the bear lord, who will teach him how to master his powers. On his quest, Drew meets Whitley, the lord-bear’s intrepid daughter, Hector, the apprentice magister, and Gretchen, the spoiled young damsel promised to the Lion heir. The young people will have no choice but to join forces to fight the forces of evil at work in Lyssia. Their courage could awaken their elders, who had given up fighting, and shift the balance of power.
Far from Arcane’s level, but cute
Wolf King may not be the best series ever, but it’s pleasant to watch. Adapting a heroic fantasy literary saga (Wereworld, by Curtis Jobling) is always a tricky business. Admittedly, the heroes, though very likeable, could be more nuanced. The presentation of the kingdom is a little quick, as is the resolution of the last episode. The format of 8 30-minute episodes is clearly too short to convey the richness of the Wereworld universe.
With all this in mind, we get caught up in the initiatory quest of our young half-human, half-animal heroes. The action is effective, despite the crude music that spoils the mood. The dark settings, magical creatures, transformations and character battles make for some pretty spectacular scenes.
Overall, even if the quality of season 1 disappoints, it promises enough to hope for a much better season 2.
