I am lucky and passionate enough to afford three platforms. If you want to know what each of the major can offer, you will find my personal selection below.
NETFLIX has the richest catalog. It includes some excellent historical series. It also offers the widest choice of foreign series. But they tend to be less creative and make fewer risky choices. His two challengers are inevitably more dynamic.
AMAZON offers some of the best series in heroic fantasy and SF. The platform has forged a large number of partnerships: HBO, Paramount, Warner Bros, MGM, Lionsgate and many others, accessible at extra cost. It’s also the best platform for sports events.
DISNEY+ is probably my favorite platform. Here you’ll find the best family series (of course) and all these Disney series you liked as a child or a teen. It broadcast National Geographic’s superb documentaries, it’s own franchise Star Wars. But it’s also perhaps the most creative platform for new series, often aimed at young adults, but not exclusively.
Unfortunately, all platforms are equally despicable because of their aversion to risk. Series are often cancelled after only one season, because of audiences below expectations (maybe a problem with expectations ?) or absurd controversies. Well, guess what : none of the legendary series became legendary after one season ! And artistic creation means controversy. Cowardice is a short term “strategy”.
As a result of a fierce competition, it is very rare that a series can be seen on several platforms. I found two exceptions, both brilliant series : Vikings is on Amazon and Netflix, and Sherlock is on the three platforms !
